Name: Bobby Widholm

Bobby Widholm was a promising ice comedian with a bright future. He is remembered as being the nicest fellow and everyone on the show loved him. After skating with the Ice Follies for only 3 years, his skating career was interrupted when he joined the armed services. During this time Bobby became ill and was hospitalized in Boston. When the Ice Follies show came to play the Boston Garden he actually snuck out to see the show! Sadly he was taken back to the hospital and passed away. There was a commemorative plaque in the Boston Garden in his memory.

Biography from 1942 Ice Follies program:

Newest comedy star of the Ice Follies is Bobby Widholm, who has been skillfully satirizing precision numbers of the ice spectacle since early last year.

Widholm came to the show from St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was a member of the St. Paul Figure Skating Club. He has developed a number of his own routines and while his appearances are essentially based upon the burlesque idea, he is at all times a satirist. The utter abandon of his ice capers makes him seem so free of all restraint and direction that few realize he requires a vast knowledge of skating and all of its features and fundamentals. Widholm’s antics as “Miss America” in the Vacationland sequence take him into many of the most trying hazards of a beginner’s excursions into figure skating.

Bobby earned his place as a star of the Ice Follies during the months before his promotion. Upon joining the troupe he was assigned to skate in four numbers nightly but whenever vacancies occurred in other parts of the program, he skated them.

Satire on ice skates is the specialty of Bobby Widholm, clever young comedian whose skillfull execution of bizarre burlesque routine as Miss America sets him apart as an expert in his own right. Back of his grotesque skating positions and awkward falls is a solid ground work of figure skating technique.
